Composition of titanium dioxide
The main component of titanium dioxide is titanium dioxide (TiO2), which is an inorganic compound in the form of white powder with a molecular weight of 79.90 and a melting point of 1830°C. The crystal structure of titanium dioxide is anatase and rutile. The main difference between these two structures is the arrangement of oxygen atoms inside the crystal.
Properties of titanium dioxide
1.Physical properties
Titanium dioxide is a white powder, insoluble in water, with high hiding power, tinting power and weather resistance. It is the most widely used white pigment. Its density is 3.8~4.2g/cm3, its melting point is 1830℃, and its specific surface area is 15~25m2/g.
2. Chemical properties
Titanium dioxide is an amphoteric oxide that can react with acids or bases to form the corresponding salts and water. Under the action of light, titanium dioxide can undergo a photocatalytic reaction to produce highly active substances such as hydroxyl radicals, which has strong oxidizing ability.
Titanium dioxide production process
The production processes of titanium dioxide are mainly divided into two types: chlorination method and sulfuric acid method. Among them, the chlorination method has a short process flow, high production efficiency, and good product quality, but it requires the use of toxic substances such as chlorine gas during the production process, which causes certain pollution to the environment. The sulfuric acid method has a long process flow and low production efficiency, but the raw material sulfuric acid used is cheap and has little impact on the environment.
